- LEVEL 5 HIGHER CERTIFICATE: EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT The Higher Certificate provides access to a higher education for many experienced and skilled Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners and trainers who do not have a recognised qualification. The purpose of this qualification is to:
- Develop ECD practitioners (e.g. home-based, centre- and school-based practitioners including Grade R, family and community ECD motivators, fieldworkers, facilitators, trainers and managers) to provide appropriate education, training and development services in the ECD sub-field.

- ECD Practitioners around Grahamstown and areas within a 100 km radius are offered training at NQF Level 4 and 5 and have the opportunity to further their career paths by studying for an in-service Bachelor of Education Degree in Foundation Phase, specialising in ECD. A partnership with Rhodes University Education Faculty makes this possible. On-site monitoring, support and quality assurance form a vital part of our training.

- The Centre for Social Development (CSD) at Rhodes University offers a number of part time courses in Early Childhood Development and community Development. These involve students attending contact sessions in the CSD training venue, and completing practical work and assignments. CSD Training facilitators visit students in their places of work, for support and monitoring. As a Public Benefit Organisation, the CSD is a donor-funded, so costs for the courses are kept low – even though students receive lunch whilst attending the contact sessions.
- The CSD is accredited with the ETDP SETA and the courses we offer have been through the rigorous programme approval process. Qualifications are made up of Unit Standards according to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). While short courses are based on one or two unit standards, the full qualifications cover a number of different unit standards.
- The Level 4 Community Development course equips practitioners to work in communities, enabling community development. This course will be offered in 2011. The course duration is 1 year part-time and the entry requirement is Grade 9. Possible professions include working as Community Development Practitioners.
