Biblionef’s mission is to make books available for children (ages three to 18) in all official languages, for reading pleasure and for education and in this way, to lay the foundation for children to make good decisions through critical thinking, and live balanced and productive lives.

To carry out their Book Donations Programme they buy books with funds raised from Funders and Donors as well as from their sustainability efforts. The book donations are then dispatched free of charge. Books go to children’s organisations without books such as schools, ECD’s (Early Childhood Development Centre’s also known as Crèche’s), Orphanage’s, Reading Clubs, and any other organisation with an educational focus. Biblionef works throughout South Africa mainly in rural and peri urban areas.

Many of the books they donate are locally written, illustrated and produced so that children can relate to the stories in them. Where too few books are available in the indigenous languages they raise funding to commission the publishing and reprints of appropriate titles.

When funding allows their Project Managers attend Biblionef Book Handovers to give informal workshops:
• to help teachers manage the books and/or to set up a Classroom or School Library
• to help motivate teachers to do storytelling, which is one of the foundations of literacy

Biblionef has the largest collection of children’s storybooks in South Africa in the official languages. This means they can react quickly to incoming requests for books.

The languages they cover are IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, Afrikaans, English, Sepedi, Setswana, Sesotho, Xitsonga, Siswati, Tshivenda and IsiNdebele.

Other Services:

Biblionef also provides services to other organisations involved in literacy. Using the opportunity of trading within certain parameters as a non-profit company, Biblionef has been very successful in selling some of its books to individuals and companies that have funds to purchase them. We have also sold our expertise in library skills and assisted organisations to source appropriate books and to setup their library.
